Told Your AC Compressor Is Bad? Here’s How We Actually Test It

October 22, 20263 minute read

A compressor is the heart of your air conditioner and the single most expensive repair on a residential system. So when a technician says “your compressor is bad,” you deserve to see the proof before you spend thousands of dollars. Here is how we test it on every call.

What the compressor does

The compressor sits in the outdoor unit and pumps refrigerant through the system, raising its pressure so it can carry heat out of your house. If it stops, nothing else matters: the fans can run all day and the air from the vents will never get cold.

How we test it

  1. Rule out the cheap stuff first. A failed capacitor or contactor will stop a perfectly good compressor from starting. These are inexpensive parts and they are the cause far more often than the compressor itself. We check them before anything else.
  2. Check the windings. With the power off, we measure resistance across the compressor’s three terminals. The readings should add up in a specific way. An open winding or a short to ground is a real failure, and the meter shows it.
  3. Measure the amperage. With the system running, we compare the compressor’s amp draw to the rating on the nameplate. A compressor pulling far over its rated amps, or tripping on overload, is in trouble.
  4. Read the pressures. Gauges on the system tell us whether the compressor is actually pumping. Equal pressures on both sides with the unit running is a classic sign of a compressor that has failed internally.

Every one of these is a number you can see on the meter or the gauge. That is the point. A compressor diagnosis should be visible, not asserted.

Why a bad compressor is a “system killer”

Here is the honest part. On a newer system with the compressor still under parts warranty, replacing it can be very reasonable. On an older system, out of warranty, the repair bill climbs fast, and sometimes the math says replace instead of repair. We walk through that math in the $5,000 rule.

The short version, straight from the crew:

Either way, the decision is a conversation with numbers in it, not a guess. If replacement is the answer, our AC installation page explains how we size and install a new system, and financing is available so a July failure does not have to be a July emergency.

Get a second opinion before you commit

If another company has told you the compressor is gone and quoted a full replacement, let us test it. Second opinions are some of the most common calls we run across Seguin, New Braunfels and Canyon Lake, and the diagnosis often changes once the system is on the gauges. Book an AC repair visit or send us a note.

Quick questions

Can a bad capacitor look like a bad compressor? Yes, and it is the most common misdiagnosis we see. The compressor hums or buzzes and will not start. A $150 part fixes it. See what AC noises mean.

Is my compressor under warranty? Many manufacturers cover the compressor for 10 years if the system was registered. We check the serial number before we quote anything.
