Air conditioners are not silent, but they are consistent. When a system that has hummed along all summer suddenly starts buzzing, banging or squealing, something has changed, and in a Texas summer that something rarely fixes itself. Here is the short version from the Rise crew, then the details.
Buzzing
Usually electrical. A failing capacitor, a contactor that is sticking, loose wiring or a motor that is trying to start and can’t. If the outdoor unit buzzes but the fan does not spin, turn the system off at the thermostat. Running a compressor that cannot start is how a $200 capacitor problem becomes a compressor replacement.
Banging or clanking
Something is loose or broken inside the unit. A blower wheel that has slipped on its shaft, a broken fan blade hitting the housing, or in the worst case, a compressor with internal damage. Shut it off and call. Letting it run risks turning a loose part into a destroyed one.
Squealing or screeching
Most often a blower motor bearing going bad or, on older systems, a worn belt. A high-pitched screech from the outdoor unit can also mean the compressor is running at dangerously high pressure. This one can go from annoying to expensive fast.
Clicking
A single click when the system turns on or off is normal. Constant clicking is not. Repeated clicking from the outdoor unit usually means the contactor or a control board is trying and failing to engage; from the thermostat it can mean a wiring or power problem.
Hissing or bubbling
A refrigerant leak, or in some cases a problem with the expansion valve. Hissing paired with warm air from the vents is a strong sign. We explain the full picture in AC low on refrigerant? That means you have a leak.
Rattling
The least worrying on the list, at first. Loose panel screws, debris in the outdoor unit, or ductwork that has come loose. Left alone, rattling ducts leak the air you are paying for, which is its own problem. See duct sealing.
When to shut it off
Buzzing with no fan movement, banging, grinding or a burning smell: turn the system off and call for AC repair. Running a system with a mechanical or electrical fault is the fastest way to turn a repair into a replacement. For everything else, the noise is a reason to book soon, not to panic.
Most of these start as maintenance problems
A weak capacitor, a dirty blower, a worn bearing and a loose panel are all things a tune-up catches before they become a noise. Our AC maintenance visits and Rise VIP plan exist for exactly this. If your AC is running but not cooling, start with five things to check before you call anyone.
Quick questions
Is a loud AC always a serious problem? No. But a new noise always means something changed. We would rather diagnose a loose screw than replace a compressor that was buzzing for a month.
