Most of the time, leaky ducts can be sealed and dirty ducts can be cleaned. But there’s a point where the ductwork itself is the problem, and no amount of cleaning fixes crushed runs, rotted insulation or ducts that were never sized right in the first place. The Rise crew hit that point on a job in Gonzales County, in a house that once served as a Hollywood set. Here’s the ductwork coming out.
Signs the ducts are past cleaning
- Flex duct with the inner liner torn or collapsed. Air can’t get through a crushed run no matter how clean it is.
- Insulation that’s wet, rotted or missing. In a Texas attic, an uninsulated duct sweats and loses cooling before the air reaches the room.
- Ducts that have come apart at the joints and are cooling the attic instead of the house.
- Evidence of pests living in or chewing through the duct.
- Undersized or badly routed runs that leave the far rooms warm no matter what the thermostat says.
Clean, seal or replace?
Here’s how we think about it on every job. Cleaning helps after renovation, pest problems or visible build-up. Sealing fixes the far more common problem of leaks at the joints, and it usually matters more than cleaning. Replacement is for ducts that are physically damaged, badly designed or so old that the materials are breaking down. We inspect the attic or crawlspace, take photos, and show you exactly what we found before recommending anything. See our duct cleaning and sealing page for the full process.
What a duct replacement involves
- Design. New runs are sized for each room so the air is balanced, not just connected.
- Removal. The old ductwork comes out, including the plenums and boots where needed.
- Install. Properly insulated duct, supported so it doesn’t sag, with sealed joints and new registers where the old ones were damaged.
- Test. Airflow is checked at the registers so you know every room is getting what it should.
Why it matters for your AC
Ductwork is half the system. A new, correctly sized air conditioner connected to bad ducts will still leave rooms uneven and bills high. That’s why we check the ducts before any replacement, and why we’ll tell you plainly if the ducts, not the equipment, are the real problem.
Quick questions
How do I know if my ducts leak? Uneven rooms, high bills and dust that comes right back are the usual signs. An inspection confirms it.
